WASHINGTON -- Today, the FCC announced its timetable for implementation of the National Broadband Plan. Free Press Executive Director Josh Silver made the following statement:

“We are glad that the FCC has finally released the timetable for moving ahead with implementation of the National Broadband Plan. Americans cannot wait any longer for the communications system they deserve.

"But the FCC's proposed agenda has one remarkable omission: the need to reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service. The FCC recently acknowledged that its authority to implement many of the most important aspects of the National Broadband Plan is in doubt. Therefore, the path for the agency is clear: Chairman Genachowski must lead the Commission to quickly reclassify broadband as a telecommunications service in order to place the National Broadband Plan on firm legal ground."
