Change the Terms is a coalition of more than 50 groups led by Free Press, Color Of Change, the Center for American Progress, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the National Hispanic Media Coalition and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Change the Terms campaign launched last October and focuses on pushing tech companies to disrupt hateful activities online.

Free Press Vice President of Strategy and Senior Counsel Jessica J. González made the following statement:

“White supremacists have become very savvy at using tech platforms to organize, fund and recruit. They’re also using these platforms to harass, threaten, defame and silence people of color and others fighting for justice. And in too many cases — most recently in Christchurch, New Zealand — hate online has had tragic real-life consequences.

“The leaders of the Change the Terms coalition developed model corporate policies for companies like Facebook and Twitter to adopt to combat hate on their platforms. In the absence of meaningful change, we’ll continue to see hate proliferate.”
