Free-Speech Advocates Mark Out Chairman Carr’s History of Censorship as the FCC Convenes Its August Meeting

WASHINGTON — On Thursday, sign-holding volunteers and advocates marked out FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s disturbing history of censorship outside the entrance to the agency’s Washington headquarters. The action, titled Brendan Carr’s Corruption Walk, is an informational trail connecting a nearby Metro stop to the FCC.

The Corruption Walk exposes the FCC chairman’s role as President Donald Trump’s censorship czar. This shameful history, recounted in a series of 11 signs, details the chairman’s corrupt attempts to silence and bully any media that refuse to bow to Trump’s anti-democratic White House agenda. The signs were displayed prior to and during the FCC’s monthly meeting, allowing attendees to read about the ways Carr has violated his oath of office as they entered the building.

Free Press created the Corruption Walk to demonstrate how the FCC chairman has failed to defend a free press and serve the public interest. A QR code on each sign allows people following the trail to contact their members of Congress and call for Carr’s impeachment.

Free Press Senior Director Timothy Karr, who authored the sign copy, said: 

“The history of Donald Trump’s censorship crusade begins at the doorstep of the Federal Communications Commission, where Carr has been an eager accomplice to the president’s anti-speech agenda.

“By marking out this history outside FCC headquarters, free-speech advocates are calling public attention to the ways the White House is colluding with Carr to silence dissenting voices in the media and bully any journalist or news outlet that doesn’t go easy on a president who has so much to answer for.

“Whether Carr is attempting to silence late-night comedians, revoke broadcaster licenses or strip diverse viewpoints from mainstream media outlets, his dangerous and corrupt history of censorship reveals a chairman who has lost his constitutional moorings. It’s up to Congress to impeach Carr for violating his oath to uphold and defend First Amendment freedoms.”
