Shilpa supports Free Press’ legal and policy work across issue areas, with a focus on free speech, media consolidation and journalism policy.

Shilpa is a journalist-turned-lawyer who has worked with a range of journalism and civil-society actors in the United States and abroad. She began her career as an editor at openDemocracy in London before returning to the United States. She worked as a freelance reporter and as a copy editor for AJ+ while conducting research projects with NGOs, law firms and grassroots groups on issues including digital justice and disinformation. She retrained as a lawyer during the pandemic and graduated from the CUNY School of Law in 2023. She has experience in civil-rights law, family law and voting-rights law. Following law school, Shilpa worked as a legal fellow at Campaign Legal Center.

Her reporting has appeared in The Baffler, The Guardian, The Intercept, Mother Jones and other outlets. She has also worked in television and documentary film and continues to collaborate with others. In 2025, she helped produce a short documentary about land defenders in Ecuador. Shilpa has been privileged to live abroad in Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and the United Kingdom and loves to travel.
