Nominate Free Press for Cy Pres Funds

Cy pres is a doctrine that permits a court to award any unallocated, unclaimed or undeliverable funds from a settlement of judgment to a nonprofit organization that would advance the interests of the class and people similarly situated. Free Press strongly believes that cy pres awards are an invaluable way to honor and advance the interests of class members when complete dispersal of the award or settlement is not practicable. As a national nonprofit advocacy organization, Free Press is eligible to be nominated for cy pres funds.

Here’s how our mission, activism and advocacy align with the principles of a cy pres award:

  1. Independence: Free Press doesn’t take money from business, government or political parties and relies on the generosity of charitable foundations and individual donors to fuel our work.

  2. Promoting Media Diversity: Free Press actively advocates for a diverse media landscape, where various voices and perspectives are represented. We work to dismantle systemic barriers that hinder marginalized communities from accessing and participating in media platforms. By promoting diversity, we foster a more inclusive and representative public discourse.

  3. Defending Press Freedom: Free Press is committed to defending the fundamental right to press freedom. We monitor and challenge threats to journalists and media outlets, whether from governmental censorship, corporate interests, or other forms of suppression. By safeguarding press freedom, we help to ensure that information flows freely and democratically.

  4. Advocating for Equitable Communication Policies: Free Press engages in policy advocacy to shape communication regulations that prioritize the public interest. We advocate for net neutrality, affordable broadband access, and other policies that promote equitable access to information and communication technologies. By advocating for these policies, we work to bridge the digital divide and empower underserved communities.

  5. Community Engagement and Education: We conduct outreach and educational initiatives to empower individuals to become informed media consumers and advocates for change. We provide resources, trainings and platforms for community members to amplify their voices and engage in media activism. By empowering communities, Free Press fosters a more participatory media landscape.

  6. Legal Advocacy and Litigation: Free Press engages in legal advocacy and litigation to defend media freedom and challenge policies that threaten it. We provide legal support to journalists, media organizations and activists facing censorship or legal challenges. By leveraging legal avenues, Free Press seeks to uphold the principles of free expression and access to information.

Our commitment to promoting media diversity, defending press freedom, advocating for equitable communication policies, engaging communities and conducting legal advocacy make us a deserving candidate for a cy pres award.
