To Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube:

We are calling on you to implement the safety protocols demanded by the Change the Terms coalition ahead of the 2022 midterm elections:

  • Fix the Algorithm: Stop promoting the most incendiary, hateful content
  • Protect People Equally: Staff up to protect democracy for all, across all languages
  • Show Us the Receipts: Disclose your business models and moderation practices

As the November midterm elections approach, our social-media feeds will be an information lifeline for many people. But right now, your platforms are rife with hate and disinformation that undermines our very democracy.

To stop the spread of hateful, violent, misleading and false content across languages for the 2022 elections and beyond, we are counting on you to change the terms and #fixthefeed.

    Fix the Feed

With just weeks remaining before the midterm elections, social-media companies are offering up PR spin instead of protections against hate and disinformation.

The Change the Terms coalition — a set of five-dozen civil-rights organizations including Free Press — has issued a set of demands for the social media-platforms in the run-up to the election. But as the Washington Post reports, the companies are falling short.

We know that online hate and disinformation disproportionately target communities of color. And companies know how to fix what’s wrong with their platforms, reduce harms and change the terms that govern how we use their products.

It is critical that Meta, TikTok, Twitter and YouTube immediately make the following changes:

    • Fix the Algorithm: Stop promoting the most incendiary, hateful content
    • Protect People Equally: Staff up to protect democracy for all, across all languages
    • Show Us the Receipts: Disclose your business models and moderation practices

This cannot wait any longer — the time for action is now.
