Comcast Spends Big in Pressing for Merger

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter and Tim Arango
In Jeff Zucker's announcement that he was stepping aside as the head of NBCU, Comcast's purchase of the company was taken almost as a fait accompli. But the combination of NBC and Comcast is still undergoing government review, and Comcast has poured out its piggy bank in Washington to see it through, spending millions of dollars on lobbyists, donations, ads and investments.

Josh Silver, Mark Toney, Jorge Corralejo Len Canty and Samuel Kang
Comcast is a massive cable TV and Internet provider, which wants to merge with NBC Universal, one of the world's largest news and entertainment content providers. However, a history of bad corporate citizenship, as indicated by this latest deceptive maneuver has caught up with Comcast.

How the FCC Might Stop the Comcast-NBC Merger

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
The Stop Big Media crowd is promising all-out combat against a proposed Comcast takeover of NBC Universal. The deal will have to pass muster with the FCC's always controversial media ownership rules, which are again in flux. We provide a refresher on how those rules have changed in the last eight years, and what it might mean for the merger.

Joseph Torres
The journalism profession is in crisis, where every week brings another bleak announcement. The situation looks dire, particularly for newspaper companies. The crisis in the media industry mirrors why our financial system is a mess. Big corporations pressured the government to deregulate industries.

Media Mergers Threaten Community News

Full article: Digital Communities
Sascha Meinrath
The past 20 years have seen an unprecedented number of media mergers among TV, radio, film, publishing and online holdings. In opposition to these massive media conglomerates is a growing bipartisan coalition of civil rights, public interest, consumer and local media organizations concerned about the quality of national and local news.
