In Russia, Free Speech Is a Matter of State Control

Full article: Washington Post
Kathy Lally
Here's what the world looks like in a country where the government controls the media: One evening, the main television channel uses prime time to broadcast a concert across vast Russia, paying tribute to the much-feared tax collectors. Another day, media overseers charge a respected newspaper with extremism -- for straightforward reporting on neo-Nazi groups.

The High Price of Journalism in Putin's Russia

Full article: Wall Street Journal
Elena Milashina
As a journalist for Russia's leading independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, I have been lucky. For over a decade I've had the privilege to report extensively on dramatic current events in my country. Yet we have paid a heavy price for our independence. Over the past 10 years, five of Novaya Gazeta's journalists have been murdered.

Russian Journalists, Fighting Graft, Pay in Blood

Full article: New York Times
Clifford J. Levy
In Russia attacks and other means of intimidation, including aggressive efforts by prosecutors to shut down news media outlets or nonprofit groups, serve as an unnerving deterrent. And in a few cases, the violence in the country has escalated into contract killings. Corruption is widespread in Russia, and government often functions poorly. But most journalists shy away from delving deeply into these problems.

Clinton Raises Impunity in Journalist Murders in Russia

Full article: Committee to Protect Journalists
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke about journalist protections at a town hall-style meeting in Moscow. Clinton mentioned that 18 journalists have been killed in Russia since 2000, and in only one case have the killers been convicted. “A society cannot be truly open when those who stand up and speak out are murdered and people cannot trust the rule of law when killers act with impunity," she said.
