Sue Wilson
The Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals handed the public a huge victory and giant corporations a rare loss, in their decision on a case that most of the public knew nothing about, but one which has the potential to benefit real people with better quality news and information for decades to come.

Victory for Media Diversity: Court Strikes Down FCC’s Attempt to Relax Media Ownership Rules

Full article: Democracy Now!
Media consolidation impacts those who are historically disenfranchised in the media system like women, people of color, workers and others who are silenced by non-representation in the media. A court decision to overturn the FCC's rule that made it easier for a single company to own a newspaper and a broadcast outlet in a single market is a huge victory for the millions of Americans that went on record to demand more diverse media.

Lessons Learned from the Fight for Low Power FM Radio

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Hannah Sassaman
Free Press members fought for years to expand local, accountable, low power community radio to their cities and towns -- and as part of a huge coalition, won that fight in late 2010. Hannah Sassaman, a longtime organizer on media reform and justice issues and a veteran of the Prometheus Radio Project, wrote these thoughts on that victory, and what we need to do next.

Radio Summer Spreads Word on Community Radio

Full article: Pitchfork
Tom Breihan
As reported back in December, Congress has passed the Local Community Radio Act The act's passage is a major victory for community radio, permitting hundreds or thousands of groups to launch low-power FM radio stations that will aid their own specific community needs. Of course, most of us are still a little hazy on how, exactly, we can launch our own local radio stations. So the nonprofit radio activist organization Prometheus Radio Project has launched Radio Summer.

Bob Fernandez
After about a decade of lobbying and community organizing from these humble poster-filled rooms in West Philadelphia, Prometheus Radio finally scored with federal legislation that will legalize hundreds of, and perhaps as many as 2,000 to 3,000, low-power FM radio stations in cities and rural markets.

Gavin Dahl
We need a more robust, more diverse NPR. Bringing together all our public interest journalism resources -- including community radio and NPR, cable access and PBS, nonprofit startups and independent bloggers -- means thinking critically about the "premier broadcast news organization" in America and how we can create a new foundation for American journalism.

Congress Passes Landmark Community Radio Act

Full article: Pitchfork
Amy Phillips and Ryan Schreiber
A significant bill was passed by both the House and Senate: the Local Community Radio Act. This legislation allows for the creation of new non-commercial stations on American airwaves-- a number that could reach to the hundreds or even thousands. This is a major victory for those aspiring to become community broadcasters, and an extremely exciting development for community-driven radio nationwide.

We Won! Senate Joins House in Passing the Local Community Radio Act

Full article: Prometheus Radio Project
A bill to expand community radio nationwide – the Local Community Radio Act – passed the U.S. Senate, thanks to the bipartisan leadership of Senators Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and John McCain (R-Ariz.). These Congressional champions for community radio joined with the thousands of grassroots advocates and dozens of public interest groups who have fought for ten years to secure this victory for local media.
