Despite support from both sides of the aisle, including strong backing from Arizona Sen. John McCain, a group of Republican senators have successfully blocked the bill that would allow more licenses for noncommercial, low-power radio stations. Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) currently has a hold on the measure, which would create a new crop of LPFM stations dedicated to hyperlocal community news, such as information about school boards, city councils and church groups or spreading music by local artists.

The Local Community Radio Act of 2009 could remove some of the stiff and unnecessary regulations placed on low-power FM stations. Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Penn.), who introduced the bill, says that up to 3,000 stations nationwide could be granted licenses.
