AT&T Starts to Threaten Over Net Neutrality

Nick Farrell
AT&T has told the FCC that if the watchdog enacts new Net Neutrality rules it will switch off its s U-Verse broadband service. However there are indications that AT&T has already slowed down U-Verse deployment under the current rules.

AT&T Threatens FCC with Slowed U-Verse Deployment

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
AT&T is threatening to slow U-Verse investment if the FCC moves forward with their plans to partially reclassify broadband ISPs under Title II of the Communications Act. Of course threats of slowed investment are the norm for carriers trying to get Uncle Sam to do what they want -- so this certainly isn't particularly surprising.

Niraj Sheth
AT&T could cut back spending on its U-Verse home television and Internet service if the FCC goes forward with its plan to tighten regulation on broadband Internet providers.

AT&T: Drop Net Neutrality or U-Verse Gets It

Matthew Lasar
AT&T said that if the FCC enacts new Net Neutrality rules, its U-verse IPTV/broadband service could "get it" -- in the sense that the telco might downgrade investment in the offering.

Verizon and U-verse Should Focus on Broadband ISP and not Triple Play

Full article: Gerson Lehrman Group
Despite the fact that Verizon and AT&T U-verse may be adding video subscribers faster than the CATV industry, their focus on the "Triple Play" is a Fool's Errand. Ultimately the consumer will place a higher value on the availability of truly high speed Internet service comparable to what is offered in South Korea.

LGBTs Hurt in Public Access TV Cutbacks

Full article: Windy City Times
Yasmin Nair
AT&T's U-verse video programming service limits access to public access programming. The limited access affects all members of the Chicago viewing area, but it has significant ramifications for the LGBT community, because it leaves AT&T subscribers without vital public-health information and creative programming that are not aired by the mainstream media.

FCC Gives More Time to Weigh In on PEG Channels

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
Citing the volume of comments, the FCC will give interested parties more time to weigh in on whether cable operators can move PEG channels to analog, whether there should be more specific rules about the signal quality of those channels relative to others, and how AT&T's U-Verse service should be defined relative to PEG requirements. The new deadline is April 1.

AT&T Cable Service Unfair

Full article: Journal and Topics Newspapers
Richard Mayer
AT&T, a multi-billion dollar telco and Illinois' first video provider franchised under state law, claims it isn't possible with its "U-Verse" system to provide equal treatment for PEG channels. But a new engineering study shows the technology is readily available to allow delivery of PEG channels on AT&T's U-Verse platform.

Media Minutes: February 13, 2009

Community television advocates have asked the FCC to investigate AT&T’s treatment of public, educational and governmental channels on its U-verse cable TV system. And with tools for mapping and data gathering getting easier to use, people are taking government transparency into their own hands.
