FCC Report: Broadband Access Lacking

Full article: MediaWeek
Katy Bachman
A new study from the FCC found that between 14 and 24 million Americans lack access to broadband and aren't about to get access any time soon. The FCC pointed to the report as more evidence that the U.S. needs the broadband plan issued by the Commission earlier this year.

Should Broadband Access Be Universal?

Full article: CIO Today
Jill Zeman Bleed
According to a report released by the FCC, the use of broadband varies greatly among different demographic groups. For example, nearly 90 percent of families with incomes of $100,000 or higher subscribe to broadband services, compared with 35 percent of families with incomes of $20,000 or less. Rural households are less likely to subscribe.

Michael Grotticelli
Providing basic broadband connections to the 3 million to 6 million American households without access could cost as much as $20 billion, the FCC said. And speeding up Internet service for the estimated 10 million Americans who have slower Internet connections could cost as much as $35 billion.

Kermit Ross
The FCC's report, "On a Rural Broadband Strategy", makes a broadband promise to rural America: "Just as rural electrification created a new group of home appliance consumers, so will a broadband-connected rural America." Simply put, broadband buildout to rural Americans promotes and encourages sustained economic development.

Joel Rose
President-elect Barack Obama has not said who he'll appoint to lead the FCC under his administration, or what the powerful federal agency's priorities will be. But if the people advising him are any indication, high-speed Internet access may be near the top of the list. (Audio 1:55)

Universal Broadband

Access to high-speed Internet service -- also known as broadband -- has become a basic public necessity, just like water or electricity.

Yet despite its importance, broadband in the United States is far from universal. Millions of Americans still stand on the wrong side of the "digital divide," unable to tap into the political, economic and social resources of the Web.
