Verizon's 45,000 Employee Strike Enters Day 2, Impasse Widens

Full article: Los Angeles Times
Nathan Olivarez-Giles
A standoff between Verizon and about 45,000 of its employees entered a second day of strikes with no apparent end in sight. At the center of the dispute between the nation's largest telecommunications company and the workers is the issue of benefits and who should pay for them -- particularly when it comes to healthcare coverage. Verizon reported a profit of $3.2 billion in its most recent quarter and a total of $258 million paid out to five top executives over the last four years.

Verizon Pursues Tough Line on Labor

Anton Troianovski
Verizon is seeking some of the biggest concessions in years from its unions, stepping up pressure on organized labor as the telecom industry shifts to less labor-intensive wireless technology. As it starts talks to replace three-year union contracts set to expire Aug. 6, Verizon wants to tie pay increases more closely to job performance, make it easier to fire workers for cause, halt pension accruals this year and require union workers to contribute to health-plan premiums.

Karl Bode
Why are unions supporting the AT&T-T-Mobile merger that would result in less competition, potentially fewer jobs overall, and significant consumer harms including price hikes? Why give more power to a company like AT&T that historically engages in both anti-competitive and anti-union behavior?
