It's Not Just Nice for Media to Be Social -- It's Imperative

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
Traditional media entities have been slow to embrace social media as a way to engage with their readers, or what journalism professor Jay Rosen has called "the people formerly known as the audience." It's clear that engaging with those readers in as many ways as possible is one of the only ways to try and reverse that state of affairs. If traditional media are failing, it's because they got complacent and stopped evolving.

A Media Guy Asks: Why Do They Hate Us?

Full article: Vanity Fair
Matt Pressman
There's no question media people think highly of themselves. We consider ourselves worthy to help shape what the entire country reads, watches and listens to. But what's equally clear is that the general public does not hold us in such high esteem. Articles about the demise of traditional news media are commonly greeted with glee and schadenfreude. So, why do they hate us?

Iran Election Coverage Sparks TV News Revolution

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
Marisa Guthrie
As journalists have been systematically expelled from Iran, TV news is increasingly looking like a Web page, with YouTube video and grainy cell phone snippets replacing traditional news footage. News organizations are vetting sources on Twitter and Facebook for authenticity and angles. It all adds up to a story that's being covered like none before it.

Iran, Twitter and the CNN Fail

Full article: SavetheInternet.com
Josh Levy
The slow displacement of the traditional news media by social media just sped up. But CNN and its other lame-duck counterparts won't disappear tomorrow, and crowd-sourced reporting on Twitter won't replace top-down, gatekeeping news operations. Nevertheless, cable news just got pwned. Score one more for the open Internet.

Megan Slack
A new poll released by Rasmussen Reports found that about one-third of Americans under the age of 40 believe that shows like the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are replacing "traditional" news outlets.

At SXSWi, How Much Should Big Media Be Listening?

Full article: CNet
Caroline McCarthy
The South by Southwest conference really prides itself on a free spirit and honest feedback from real people, real users and real companies. One would think that SXSWi is the sort of place where the old media's struggling elite might show up in search of a few answers. However, traditional media companies are hard to find.

'Digital Influencers' Get Info from Magazines, TV First

Full article: Advertising Age
Michael Bush
A new report reveals that 84 percent of digital influencers go online to find out more about something only after first reading about it in magazines and newspapers or hearing about it on TV or the radio.

The Best 2008 Political Convention Coverage Online

Full article: PBS/MediaShift
Mark Glaser
An interesting trend at the conventions is that it's more difficult to tell the independent bloggers from the mainstream media bloggers. As traditional media embraces a multi-platform approach, the distinction between who deserves a media credential and who doesn't has blurred like never before.

New Media Stream Into an Old Tradition

Full article: New York Times
Katharine Q. Seelye
The Democratic National Convention is a showcase for how new media is mixing with — and altering — old politics in an age of declining attention from the big television networks. The event also shows how new media can help the party reach audiences unfiltered by old media.

Citizen Journalists Make New Inroads into Political Reporting

Uri Friedman
Stuck with rising competition from Internet-mediated news, traditional media have been reaching out to Web-savvy citizen journalists to expand their online audiences. This year, major television networks have begun carving out reporting slots for nonprofessionals on the presidential election.
