I had never been arrested before and the prospect of prison in Zimbabwe, one of the poorest, most repressive places on earth, seemed especially forbidding: the squalor, the teeming cells, the possibility of beatings. But I told myself what I’d repeatedly taught my two children: Life is a collection of experiences. You savor the good, you learn from the bad.

Reporters Without Borders is deeply concerned about freelance journalist Frank Chikowore, who was arrested by police near his Harare home yesterday and has since been held in an unknown location. The organisation also calls for the release of British journalist Jonathan Clayton, who was arrested at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo international airport in Bulawayo on 9 April.

A New York Times correspondent and a second man, reportedly a British journalist, have been released on bail in Zimbabwe after they were jailed for covering the country's elections without government permission.

Reporters Without Borders condemned the Zimbabwean government’s refusal to allow several leading international news media to cover the 29 March general elections although it has signed international conventions that require it to guarantee “total access to national and international media.”
