The Rules on News Coverage Are Clear, but the Police Keep Pushing

Full article: New York Times
Michael Powell
In late November, New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said police officers must "respect the public's right to know about these events and the media's right of access to report." Recent events suggest that the commissioner should speak more loudly.

Media Minutes: November 25, 2011

Several telecom and cable companies earned huge profits but paid next to nothing in taxes by exploiting loopholes in the tax code to avoid paying their fair share. And at least 26 journalists have been arrested while covering Occupy Wall Street protests across the country. One reporter kept his camera rolling as he was arrested.

It's Not Just Nice for Media to Be Social -- It's Imperative

Mathew Ingram
Traditional media entities have been slow to embrace social media as a way to engage with their readers, or what journalism professor Jay Rosen has called "the people formerly known as the audience." It's clear that engaging with those readers in as many ways as possible is one of the only ways to try and reverse that state of affairs. If traditional media are failing, it's because they got complacent and stopped evolving.

Student: I Want to Tell the Truth About Journalism that Nobody Wants to Say

Full article: Poynter Institute
Jim Romenesko
It's not the fault of Craigslist or the blogosphere that newspaper journalism has been turned upside down. All of that stuff is on us, the journalists. It's our fault. Our job was to report the news, and we did that. But we got complacent, and we stopped evolving, and soon the concept of a news article became far removed from what we valued. Now we find ourselves in an awkward position where an indispensable component of democracy is slipping away, and we're scrambling.

Covering 2012, Youths on the Bus

Jeremy W. Peters
For decades, campaign buses were populated by hotshots, some of whom covered politics for decades, from Walter Mears to David S. Broder to Jules Witcover. Now those once-coveted jobs are going to young journalists so news organizations can save money.
