Eco-media in the Arts: Transnational Temps

Why "Earth Art for the 21st Century"? Like a lot of people, the artists who formed Transnational Temps in 2001 (info about the collective follows this article) sensed that coverage of global warming and other environmental issues was woefully inadequate. Commercially sponsored "informative" programming continues to suffer from attention deficit disorders, to say nothing of conflicts of interest. The Internet has presented a means to address the situation.

No To Monopolies; No To Sirius/XM Merger

In February 2007, Sirius and XM announced
a merger that would create a single satellite radio network in the
United
States. However, since Sirius and XM are the
only satellite networks in the nation, a merger between the two would create a
monopoly.

Congressman Nadler, You've Been Had!

Congressman Nadler's recent Op-Ed in the New York Times, "We Interrupt This Broadcast" is full of misinformation and verifiable incorrect assertions. Folks like former FCC Senior Counsel, Kenneth Carter, and Matthew Lasar over at ars technica have already taken the piece to task for reading like a spin project of the National Association of Broadcasters. Since I've had a bit more time to address Congressman Nadler's Op-Ed rather than just focus on the propaganda aspects of the piece, I thought I'd provide some primary sourcing to directly refute the main points of his article.

Deconstructing the Myth of the "Liberal Media"

There
still seems to be a certain
skewed perception of the media held by the conservative public and
perpetuated by those within the current administration. Whenever the
media actually does its job and roots out anything unfavorable to the
current administration, the uncovered facts are written off as "liberal

FCC to Tribune: So Sue Me

Late on Friday — which FCC watchers know is the only time new policies are announced– the agency effectively granted Tribune Co. further waivers to operate both TV stations and the major daily newspaper in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Hartford Conn.

The FCC had been under intense lobbying pressure to approve the waivers so that real estate magnate Sam Zell could complete his complex buyout of Tribune before the end of the year. But FCC Kevin Martin didn’t stop there.

The FCC could have issued a single temporary waiver while it sorts
out the rules governing newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership everywhere.
But the FCC’s maneuver is far more complicated — and devious.

New Jersey Citizens Fight for Their Voice

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Nov. 28th, there is going to be an unprecedented
hearing in New Jersey. Concerned citizens and public interest groups have petitioned the FCC to deny WWOR-TV 9's license to broadcast on the public airwaves, asserting that they have not lived up to their commitment to serve New Jersey communities.
