EU Groups: Data Retention Policies Violate Rights Convention

A group of 43 European civil liberties groups today filed a brief with the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg that argues for overturning a 2006 EU directive mandating data retention policies across EU countries. The groups assert that the directive is illegal, but more importantly that the directive interferes with basic human rights granted to all Europeans.

Council of Europe: Internet Filtering Needs Strong Limits

With Internet filtering of all kinds becoming such big news (and such big business), especially in Europe, it's no surprise that a body like the Council of Europe would eventually weigh in with a set of filtering "best practices."

Print Media and Elections

My own preference - like another participant's regarding the 2008 elections - is also for a 'dialogue of ideas', at least in the print media, which are probably more suitable than broadcast media for that level of seriousness.

Cell Phones: England vs. The US

I just moved to England for the year, and so I decided it was time to get a new cell phone. Back in the States I had a RAZR phone on the T-mobile network. I didn't like the phone that much - the buttons were hard to use and the interface was confusing, but being a student I didn't want to shell out $200-$400 for something cooler, so I decided to get a European SIM card. But here's the problem - when I went to the Phones4U store, they told me they couldn't give me a card. My phone had been 'locked' to the US T-Mobile network, and nothing short of some serious hacking was going to free it.
