Full article: Slate
L.V. Anderson
You may notice something striking about this week's American edition of Time magazine. While readers in Asia, Europe and the South Pacific — really, the rest of the Time-reading world — confront a serious profile about Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his role in the euro crisis, Americans are in for a special treat: a cover story called "The Surprising Science of Animal Friendships."

Hacking Cases Focus on Memo to a Murdoch

Full article: New York Times
Sarah Lyall and Ravi Somaiya
As dozens of investigators and high-powered lawyers converge on Rupert Murdoch's News International in the phone-hacking scandal, attention has focused on the printout of an email excavated three months ago from a sealed carton left behind in an empty company office. Addressed to Murdoch's son James, it contained explosive information about the scale of phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid -- information James Murdoch says he failed to take in because he did not read the whole email chain.

Elizabeth Jensen
A recent spate of vulgarity in Newsweek could cost the news magazine some valuable partners — the public television and radio stations that offer the magazine as a gift in exchange for donations.

Guardian Editor Alan Rusbridger Takes Pay Cut

Full article: The Guardian
Dan Sabbagh
The Guardian's editor-in-chief is to take a voluntary pay cut of 10 percent, and ask the publisher of the newspaper to halve the annual contribution it makes to his pension. The editor's action comes as the newspapers have been engaged in a string of measures to trim costs and raise revenues, including a decision to stop printing overseas, incorporate standalone sections into the main newspaper and raise the cover price during the week.

The Vital Role of Global Journalism in the Digital Age

Full article: The Atlantic
Peter Osnos
A new report from the Committee to Protect Journalists shows the new challenges they face around the world. CPJ's annual report, along with the many additional surveys available on its website, provide unusually valuable insight into the organization's work: monitoring the role of journalism and defending the rights of journalists wherever unrest spreads.

It's Up to Us to Protect the First Amendment

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
At their best, journalists tell our stories and cover our communities with depth, care and a critical eye. When it comes to the future of journalism, we are all in this together. Journalists with laptops, freelancers with cameras, ordinary people with cellphones — we all need to be able to speak freely. The First Amendment does not apply only to journalists. It applies to all Americans, and we all have to take responsibility when it is threatened or eroded.
