Save the Date for NCMR 2013!

Full article: Free Press
Mary Alice Crim
Internet censorship. Massive media mergers. Attacks on public and independent media. Not to mention all that slanted, horse race-style election coverage that does nothing to inform or inspire. So what are we going to do about all of it? Simply put, we are working in Washington, D.C and across the nation for media that truly serve the needs of everyday people. That's why Free Press is excited to announce the next National Conference for Media Reform, which will be held in Denver on April 5–7, 2013.

News Corp. Protesters Issue List of Grievances

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Timothy Karr
A coalition of concerned citizens, labor organizations, advocacy groups and OccupyLA protesters will demonstrate outside News Corporation's annual shareholders' meeting on Oct. 21. Under Rupert Murdoch, News Corp. has accumulated toxic levels of media power -- including cable channels, news networks, newspapers, television stations, movie studios and more. News Corp. leverages its news and entertainment empire to bully regulators, elect compliant politicians, gain regulatory favors and undermine the public interest.

This year I celebrated Halloween early. Wearing cardboard-television costumes, two fellow Free Press staffers and I traveled to northern California to attend the Bioneers Conference, which focuses on ways to create a more sustainable world.

We’ve reached a critical juncture in the debate over the future of wireless Internet in America. The Justice Department has sued to block AT&T’s takeover of T-Mobile, and the movement for better broadband in rural communities is growing.

Media Justice Activists Launch New Effort to Target Black Web Users

Jamilah King
A group of media justice advocates is determined to move the conversation about Web rights from the Beltway to the mainstream. The goal is to take what's usually a wonky back-room conversation between politicians and telecom companies and engage with ordinary people in communities of color, who they say often feel the brunt of decades of deregulatory policies.

Victories of People-Powered Lobbying

Candace Clement
Over the last two weeks, more than 80 Free Press activists from across the country have met with members of Congress and their staff to provide the public's perspective on a range of media issues -- including the AT&T–T-Mobile merger. In these visits policymakers heard not from lobbyists and lawyers but from people who are impacted by the decisions made in Washington.
