Where Will Broadband Competition Take Philadelphia?

Full article: Technically Philly
Chris Reber
For many years, broadband Internet in Philadelphia was only available to large companies and institutions with the budget to literally build connections. But Verizon's successful push to bring FiOS to the city has spurred Internet service providers operating in Philadelphia to compete. The result, city officials say, is that residents will pay less for better service.

Philadelphia was once again the subject of head-scratching and ridicul, this time with the "blog tax" controversy. So does Philadelphia have a blog tax?

President Barack Obama awarded a $6.4 Million grant to the City of Philadelphia to create or enhance 77 public computer centers. The award will enable residents to conduct job searches, access benefits, find life-saving health information, find stable housing and complete homework assignments to help them succeed in school.

Comcast Files Suit in Effort to Perpetuate Digital Divide

Todd Wolfson
Comcast has challenged the City of Philadelphia's application to the federal government for stimulus funds to build broadband infrastructure for disenfranchised communities. This decision by Comcast exhibits the worst of corporate malfeasance and should be challenged.

Jerry Del Colliano
Clear Channel is suing a local community group in Philadelphia to halt their annual Unity Day festivities. The communications giant has pulled out of the event this year and says it owns the term "Unity Day." So Philadelphia, the community Clear Channel is licensed to serve, can't use the term, "Unity Day."

The Internet for Everyone

Todd Wolfson and Hannah Sassaman
Philadelphia is lining up for a race with a big prize -- tens of millions of dollars in stimulus money to expand Internet access. The city has led an open process for designing an application for a slice of the stimulus money, which could change how Philadelphians communicate, for good.

Larry Atkins
Picture this: It's 2014 and Philly's sports teams are on a roll. The Eagles win their first Super Bowl and the Phillies win a third straight World Series. Sounds great, right? But who will be covering these sports stories, since the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News stopped publishing in 2012?
