A Prime Case for Newsroom Diversity

Full article: Maynard Institute
Bob Butler
Pressure continues to mount on a Chicago television station that aired edited video making it seem as if a 4-year-old boy aspired to a life of crime. Professional journalism groups and the NAACP have criticized CBS station WBBM for violating one of the basic tenets of journalism ethics. Now, U.S. Rep. Bobby L. Rush (D-Ill.), whose district includes part of Chicago, has directed his staff to investigate the incident.

Collaboration or Collusion in Chicago TV News?

Full article: Chicago Reader
Michael Miner
Local TV news operations across America have been merging their newsrooms -- circumventing media ownership rules. Chicago is the poster city for this kind of covert consolidation with a local news sharing agreement between four stations -- CBS, NBC, FOX and CW -- that combines journalists, crew and editorial staff to produce a single newscast.

After a Year, Chirp Radio Has Made Gains, but Is Still Awaiting Its Own Frequency

Idalmy Carrera
The Local Community Radio Act, signed into law this month by President Obama, would seem a fitting first birthday present for Chirp Radio, a Chicago community radio project, except that the law does not help groups hoping to be awarded frequencies in the country's biggest radio markets.

Analyzing Comcast's 'Support'

Mitchell Szczepanczyk
A new report shows that an FCC public hearing in Chicago about the Comcast-NBC merger, the public comments were almost evenly split. But the pro-Comcast speakers barely referred to the merger at all. And not one of them gave any reasons to support the merger that were directly relevant to the merger itself.

Missing the Point: A Comical Hearing on Comcast-NBCU

Full article: Gapers Block
Timna Axel
Comcast's promises to Congress about improving its record on diversity doesn't matter. There's no guarantee that Comcast will live up to its word, and recent merger history shows us they won't. Comcast and NBC can make as many promises as they want and the politicians can earn points for demanding conditions, but once the deal is done, nobody will hold them to it.

Showdown in Chicago over the Comcast-NBCU Deal

Bob Fernandez
Tuesday's public hearing on Comcast's proposed deal to acquire control of NBC Universal. The event in Chicago, hosted by the FCC, promises lively political theater over media consolidation issues with five hours of testimony from supporters and opponents of the $30 billion Comcast-NBCU deal and two hours of "open microphone" public comment.

David Hatch
It's the biggest communications mega-merger of the Obama administration and a transaction that could reshape the media landscape for generations. Yet only one of the FCC's five regulators, Democrat Michael Copps, will bother to attend the agency's July 13 "public workshop" in Chicago on the proposed combination of Comcast and NBC Universal.
