Elizabeth Jensen
A recent spate of vulgarity in Newsweek could cost the news magazine some valuable partners — the public television and radio stations that offer the magazine as a gift in exchange for donations.

Cutting All State Funding to OETA Would be a Disservice

Full article: Oklahoman
Bills by two legislators to end all state appropriations would have a major impact on the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority. OETA most likely would have to reduce its statewide coverage and local programming. These cutbacks would indirectly hinder state goals of improving education and increasing the number of college graduates.

Full article: StateCollege.com
Adam Smeltz
News that's hit State College over the past three months has crashed down in largely unpredictable waves. But here's one wave we can predict: Gov. Tom Corbett will introduce a state budget proposal that could well squeeze -- anew -- a range of public entities, including public broadcasting.

Adam Power
Valentine's Day has been set as the date for the sale of KCSM-TV, the PBS station serving San Mateo and the counties south of San Francisco. The station is owned by the local community college and said it could no longer afford to operate the station because it is short of funds.

Public Media: Still on the Chopping Block

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Amy Kroin
Last November Free Press released On the Chopping Block: State Budget Battles and the Future of Public Media, an inventory of dramatic state-level funding cuts to public broadcasting. Our report documents how state support for public broadcasting has plunged since the economy took a nosedive in 2008. What’s more, the report notes that politics — not financial considerations — have driven much of this budget cutting. Three months after the report's release, the funding picture for public media remains about as lovely as Voldemort.

OETA's State Funding Could Stop Under Proposed Legislation

Wayne Green
Two Oklahoma state legislators have proposed zero-funding for OETA, the statewide educational television network. While the move wouldn't kill the state signal for Big Bird and Antiques Roadshow, it would mean a lot fewer Oklahomans would be able to get it.
