Comcast to Treat File-Sharing Equally

Comcast Corp., under investigation by federal media regulators over reports it slows Internet access to file-sharing programs, yesterday said it will no longer treat peer-to-peer files differently than other Web traffic. Philadelphia-based Comcast is partnering with BitTorrent Inc. to develop ways that Internet users can share large files without disrupting the experience of other subscribers.

Comcast in Pact over Net Traffic

Comcast and a California file-sharing firm may have called a truce yesterday in a bitter broadband battle that led to a special federal hearing last month in Cambridge. But critics of Comcast - which has been accused of unfairly blocking Internet traffic for some broadband users - say the truce isn’t going to end the war over whether large telecom companies are increasing their control over the Internet.

Comcast Admits It Can Do the Impossible

Faced with continued scrutiny from the US Federal Communications Commission, Comcast has agreed to release its choke hold on BitTorrent and other peer-to-peer traffic. It says it will soon adopt an alternative method of controlling upload traffic on its cable-based internet service.

Comcast Agrees to Stop Blocking Internet Users

In the wake of bad publicity and a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigation stemming from Comcast's policy of blocking some subscribers from using file-sharing services such as BitTorrent, the beleaguered cable behemoth has made an about-face and announced it would work with BitTorrent to implement better "network management" practices.

Comcast-BitTorrent: The Net's Finally Growing Up

Something remarkable happened on Thursday -- an Internet service provider and a peer-to-peer software company announced a collaboration and agreed to work together. Such companies have been all but at war for the past few years. This détente almost certainly portends broader cross-industry collaboration to insure that the Internet can become what it was not originally designed to be -- a way to distribute and consume media.
