Photojournalist Arrested at Occupy D.C.

Full article: Washington Post
Katie Rogers
Photojournalist Jerry Nelson was among the handful of people arrested at Occupy D.C.'s McPherson Square camp this weekend. He's not the first journalist to be arrested during such a sweep: Over the weekend, photojournalist Carlos Miller was arrested during Occupy protests in Miami and found that police had deleted video he'd taken of his arrest. And in November, at least six journalists were arrested during a New York Police Department raid on Zuccotti Park.

On Saturday, six journalists, many with press credentials, were arrested when Oakland, Calif. police clashed with Occupy protesters. These arrests bring the total number of journalists detained in Occupy protests nationwide to nearly 50. Free Press has been tracking journalist arrests and press suppression related to the Occupy movement since September.

Dear WaPo: Innovating Too Quickly Is Not the Problem

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
In a column about the launch of some recent digital projects from the Washington Post, the newspaper's ombudsman expressed concern there might be too much innovation going on at the paper, and all this change might be happening too quickly for some, both inside and outside the paper. But as a number of responses have noted, the last thing the Post needs to worry about is whether it’s moving too quickly. If anything, the pace of change in media is speeding up rather than slowing down.

What Are the Rights of Reporters Covering Protests?

Full article: The Nation
Jonathan Peters
Reporting on protests is no easy job -- just ask the thirty-six reporters arrested while covering the Occupy movement, from New York to Boston to Nashville and beyond. What rights do reporters have to gather the news? Do they need credentials? Do reporters have the right in public places to record police activity?

Free Press' Josh Stearns combines the craftsmanship of traditional journalism with the latest tools of new media to contribute an important and lasting piece of enterprise journalism. Three-dozen arrests that could have been forgotten or misrepresented instead became a part of the larger Occupy story, clearly identifying one of the key questions about how law enforcement was handling the protests.

Defining Journalism Is Easier Said than Done

Full article: GigaOM
Mathew Ingram
The ripples continue to spread from a recent Oregon court ruling involving a blogger who was sued for defamation, and argued that she should be covered by the state's "media shield" law. The judge decided that she didn't qualify as a journalist, which in turn reignited the old debate over whether bloggers are -- or can sometimes be -- journalists. Some have argued that instead of this question, it's more important to define what journalism is, and ensure that it remains protected. But in many ways, that is even harder to define than who qualifies to be a journalist.

Adam Hochberg
Media reform organization Free Press has delivered a petition to the nation's mayors urging them to protect the rights of journalists covering Occupy rallies. The group says 30 journalists have been arrested at rallies, and it’s tracking those arrests on a Google docs spreadsheet and a Storify page.
