Ex-FCC Chief Martin on Media Ownership

Full article: Triangle Business Journal
Sougata Mukherjee
Kevin Martin, the former head of the FCC , says he wouldn't be surprised if media companies take a recent appellate court decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. The appeals court restored a long-standing ban of media companies owning both a newspaper and a television station in the same market.

Another Blow to Local Journalism

Full article: Free Press
We are disappointed that the Third Circuit decided to lift the stay and allow the relaxed newspaper-broadcast cross ownership rule from the Kevin Martin era to go into effect. Vibrant local news is vital for our democracy, and without competition, newsmakers and media are less accountable.

Ira Teinowitz
An appellate court panel removed its hold on a 2007 FCC rule that let newspapers and broadcasters buy each other in a market. But while lifting the hold, the three-judge panel of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals said it would continue to look at the rule's legality.

Senate Committee Members Say Looser Media Ownership Rules Will Not Solve Newspapers' Woes

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
The heads of the Senate Commerce Committee and Communications Subcommittee made it clear that newspapers should not be looking for looser media ownership rules as a solution to their economic woes. Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) minced no words, saying newspapers were fooling themselves if they believed that relaxing ownership rules would save them.
