Kevin Roderick
The Los Angeles Times announced that the design, news operations and Web operations staffs would be combined into one department, along with at least some of the copy editors. Jerry Hirsch
A group of former and current Los Angeles Times employees settled a federal lawsuit against GreatBanc Trust, the trustee for Tribune Co.'s employee stock-ownership plan, for $32 million. The employees contended that the leveraged buyout that resulted in creation of the ownership plan violated federal pension law.

Jeremy W. Peters
Big city newspapers all across the country have suffered one indignity after another in the last few years. But few of them have been as hard hit -- or gotten as much grief for it -- as the Los Angeles Times.

Brett Levy
While nearly two-thirds of former Los Angeles Times journalists would like to remain in the news business, more than half believe their former paper eventually will fold -- and nearly as many think newspapers in general have been mortally wounded, according to a recent informal survey.

Can Russ Stanton Turn Around the Los Angeles Times?

Russ Stanton, the editor of the Los Angeles Times, has the biggest challenge in journalism today: Turn around one of America's great newspapers or risk going down in history as its last editor.

Los Angeles Times' Front Page Ad Sparks Outcry

Alana Samuels and Martin Zimmerman
The Los Angeles Times came under criticism after it ran a front-page advertisement that resembled a news story. The Times appears to be the first major U.S. newspaper in modern times to have run a front-page ad in a format that could be mistaken for a news story.

Shira Ovide
The Los Angeles Times carried a front-page advertisement that tiptoed along the traditional line between news and commerce. The president of NBC Entertainment marketing said the ad concept developed by the Times was "innovative and breakthrough."

Mark Fitzgerald
The Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times are consolidating their foreign correspondents in a single unit to be run from Los Angeles, Editor Gerould Kern said in a memo to employees. Kern compared the new arrangement to the Washington bureau, which combined the staffs into one operation.

The Net and the News

When NPR announced it was canceling all of its newspaper subscriptions to save money, there was much tut-tutting in the newsrooms. But the real source of irritation for ink-stained journalists is their employer's inability to grasp the new world of information and create better business models.

Los Angeles Times Editor Talks About Newsroom Cuts with His Predecessor

Full article: Nieman Journalism Lab
Zachary M. Seward
Jim O’Shea was fired as editor of the Los Angeles Times for resisting staff cuts. His successor, Russ Stanton, has trimmed nearly 300 positions from the newsroom as Tribune Co. attempts to crawl out from under its crushing load of debt. They spoke about the wisdom of those layoffs and the newspaper's financial state. (Video 4:34 - script incl.)
