Cantwell Introduces Bill to Strengthen Net Neutrality Rules

Full article: The Hill
Sara Jerome
Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) introduced legislation to give the FCC's Net Neutrality rules more muscle.
She is joined on the bill by Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.), who, along with Cantwell, asserted the broadband regulations passed at the agency last month are too weak.

Free Press Lauds Internet Freedom, Broadband Promotion, and Consumer Protection Act of 2011

Full article: Free Press
Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) introduced the Internet Freedom, Broadband Promotion, and Consumer Protection Act of 2011, a bill that would protect the Internet's level playing field and prohibit anti-consumer practices online. Sen. Cantwell's bill would strengthen the weak, loophole-ridden Net Neutrality rules that the FCC enacted in December.

Katy Bachman
House Republicans are wasting no time going after the FCC's controversial Net Neutrality order. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) filed the Internet Freedom Act, asserting that the authority to regulate the Internet rests with Congress, not the FCC.

A New Tool for Putting Net Neutrality on the Map

Megan Tady
The question isn't who's been naughty and who's been nice this holiday season. It's who's supporting Net Neutrality and who isn't. A new interactive map, created by crowdsourcing media activists, shows where the members of Congress stand and makes it easy to contact them.

Joshua Breitbart
We can't take Net Neutrality for granted. Verizon and AT&T have spent more than $20 million on federal lobbying this year trying to thwart the Internet Freedom Preservation Act of 2009, a bill in Congress that would enshrine Net Neutrality in law. The New York City Council will likely vote on a resolution to endorse the bill on Dec. 21.

Chloe Albanesius
House members revived the Net Neutrality issue, with one member formally signing on to legislation that would require the FCC to keep a watchful eye on ISPs. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) announced that he has formally signed on as a co-sponsor of the Internet Freedom Preservation Act.

Will 'Astroturf' Groups Block Net Neutrality Reform?

Megan Tady
There is no genuine mass uprising against health care reform or climate change legislation or the open Internet. But the industry groups and corporations that benefit from the status quo -- and thus have the most at stake in these debates -- want us to think otherwise. And they’ve developed a slick way of manufacturing dissent -- astroturf groups.

Why We Need Net Neutrality -- and Why We Need It Now

Neil McCallister
The information economy has become one of the most important sectors in American industry. By no means should the keys to this revolutionary market rest in the hands of a few self-interested private businesses. This time, we need to make Net Neutrality legislation stick.
