How to Promote a Merger

Full article: New York Times
AT&T has the right -- as a huge corporation, indeed, the duty -- to make philanthropic donations. They are just not a good basis to decide the future of the nation’s telecommunications. Yet since it announced the deal in March, AT&T’s proposed megamerger has garnered the support of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and the National Education Association, among others.

Benjamin Todd Jealous
President and CEO of the NAACP Benjamin Todd Jealous called Van Jones "an American treasure." Jealous said that the former Obama Administration's Green Jobs Czar is one of the few Americans in recent years to have generated powerful new ideas that are creating new jobs here.
NAACP Using Cell Phones to Fight Racism

Deepti Hajela
The NAACP has launched a program that lets people use their cell phones to report incidents of police misconduct. The system allows people who capture photos or video of incidents of alleged police misconduct on their cell phones to send it through a Web browser to the organization or upload it through a computer.

News Corp. Forms Diversity Council Following New York Post Chimp Cartoon

Full article: Associated Press
News Corp. has agreed to form an external diversity council after meeting with civil rights groups about a New York Post cartoon that critics said likened President Barack Obama to a dead chimpanzee. The company will form a "diversity community council" that will meet with senior company executives twice a year, News Corp. and the NAACP said.

Wireless Internet Will Be Key to Minority, Low-Income Areas

Full article: Dow Jones
Fawn Johnson
A newly formed coalition of civil rights and minority groups is asking federal regulators to prioritize disadvantaged communities in a national Internet plan. The coalition believes government should go beyond the $7.2 billion it has set aside for broadband deployment and provide additional aid to people who can't afford to wire up or don't understand why they should.

NAACP Wants to Focus on Newsrooms

Full article: Maynard Institute
Richard Prince
The NAACP plans to focus on diversity in newspaper newsrooms after the fallout from the chimpanzee cartoon in the New York Post subsides. Diversity efforts in newsrooms have stalled and many have given the issue lower priority as economic and survival issues consume the time of editors and publishers.
