FCC Mulls Changes to Media Ownership Rules

Full article: The Hill
Brendan Sasso
The FCC voted to move forward with a proposal to update its media ownership rules. The proposed regulations would loosen the ban on companies owning both a newspaper and a TV station in a top 20 market, but would leave in place a cap on the number of radio and TV stations a company can own in the same markets.

FCC Proposes Relaxing Newspaper-TV Ownership Rules

Full article: Los Angeles Times
Joe Flint
The Federal Communications Commission is trying once again to blow out rules that prohibit companies from owning both a television station and a newspaper in the same big city. As part of a review of its media ownership rules, the FCC said it wanted relax the newspaper and television cross-ownership rule in top-20 markets. The agency tried a similar maneuver in 2007, but media watchdogs argued that it would lead to a loss of independent voices and too much media consolidation.

FCC Proposes More Deregulation, But Not for Radio

Full article: All Access
The FCC has agreed to loosen its consolidation rules -- but not for radio. The Commission has proposed easing limits on one owner holding a television station and newspaper in a top-20 U.S. market -- but existing caps on TV and radio station ownership will stay the same.

FCC Plan to Ease Cross-Ownership Rules Points to Consolidation

Eric Engleman and Christ Strohm
The FCC agreed to propose easing limits on one owner holding a television station and newspaper in a top 20 U.S. market. Consumer groups said the move would concentrate too much power in the hands of large companies and limit the number of voices.

Brian Selter
The Federal Communications Commission is preparing to relax a longstanding rule that limits the ability of companies to own both a newspaper and a television or radio station in the same local market. Public interest groups and a departing member of the commission, Michael J. Copps, expressed concerns that the newspaper-broadcast rule change could cause more consolidation in the media industry.

The FCC has released a proposal for changes to the media cross-ownership rules, relaxing the rules for owning a TV station and newspaper in the top 20 markets. Stephen Lendman
In October 2007, FCC chairman Kevin Martin proposed lifting the 1975 media cross-ownership rule, forbidding one company from owning a newspaper and television or radio station in the same city. A court has now thrown out Martin's rule -- a huge victory for diverse voices. But major media outlets continue to downplay the decision's importance.

Ruling May Force Tribune Co. to Shed Assets

Lynne Marek
In a blow to Tribune Co. as its seeks to emerge from bankruptcy proceedings, the media company may be forced to divest broadcast or newspaper operations in several markets, including Chicago, following a federal appeals court decision. While pending Tribune requests to keep waivers may be put on hold until the company exits bankruptcy proceedings, the court decision likely will make it tougher to argue for keeping the waivers in the future, says a Georgetown Law professor who represented organizations that challenged the FCC's 2008 relaxed media ownership rules.
