This week on CounterSpin, a special look at race and people of color in U.S. journalism. Told quickly it's a story about under representation and exclusion, of bias -- and of breakthroughs. And all along, recognition that the stories news media tell us about the world and one another are a tremendous shaping force on the state of racial and ethnic understanding and the advance of social justice.

Sue Wilson
The Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals handed the public a huge victory and giant corporations a rare loss, in their decision on a case that most of the public knew nothing about, but one which has the potential to benefit real people with better quality news and information for decades to come.

Victory for Media Diversity: Court Strikes Down FCC’s Attempt to Relax Media Ownership Rules

Media consolidation impacts those who are historically disenfranchised in the media system like women, people of color, workers and others who are silenced by non-representation in the media. A court decision to overturn the FCC's rule that made it easier for a single company to own a newspaper and a broadcast outlet in a single market is a huge victory for the millions of Americans that went on record to demand more diverse media.

Court Overturns FCC Cross-Ownership Rule

Full article: New York Times
Bill Carter
A federal appeals court overturned a 2008 decision by the FCC to relax restrictions on cross-ownership of newspapers and broadcast outlets in the same city. And while the ruling may not have an immediate effect on current TV broadcasters, a more immediate impact could come in the radio business, where efforts by some companies to expand the ownership limits -- currently up to eight stations in a single city -- were rejected.

Court Sides with Media Ownership Limits in FCC Case

Cecilia Kang
A federal appeals court upheld decades-old media ownership rules that prevent a single owner from controlling a newspaper and broadcast station in the same city. Public interest groups, which challenged the FCC's action, argue that even as options for accessing information continue to multiply, allowing a small concentration of companies to create that content -- news reports, videos and columns -- limits the number of voices and opinions in the public discourse.

Big Loss for Big Media and the FCC: Court Rejects Media Consolidation Push

Timothy Karr
It's not every day that you can celebrate a win for the public over big media. But a federal appeals court threw out an attempt by the FCC and industry titans to gut media ownership limits. The decision is a sweeping victory for the public interest. The court rejected arguments made by broadcast and newspaper giants while exposing the FCC's repeated failures to rein in runaway consolidation.

FCC's Attempt to Ease Media Ownership Rules Struck Down by Court

Joshua L. Weinstein
An FCC decision that would have allowed companies to own both newspapers and broadcast stations in the same market was struck down by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia. In its ruling, the court also upheld pre-existing limits on the number of television and radio stations any broadcaster can own in any single market, and ordered the FCC to consider how media ownership rules affect ownership of media outlets by women and people of color.

Media Minutes: July 8, 2011

In a victory for the public interest, the Third Circuit Court of Appeals dealt a decisive blow against would-be media moguls this week. It threw out the FCC’s rules that would have allowed one company to own a newspaper and broadcast stations in the same market. And pediatricians agree with First Lady Michelle Obama. They both say that kids should limit their time in front of TV, computers and other devices.
