Consumers, Industry Differ Wildly on Broadband Definition

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
For most of the last decade broadband was defined as anything faster than 200kbps, the FCC only recently upgrading that definition to 768kbps downstream and 200kbps upstream. Free Press said that the FCC should set the bar as high as possible. In contrast, the cable industry says they'd prefer if the definition of broadband remains the same.

Free Press Offers FCC Input on Defining Broadband

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
Free Press has told the FCC it needs to define broadband in terms of a host of factors, including price, openness, speed (actual rather than advertised), and more. That puts it 180 degrees from the recommendations of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association.

Wendy Davis
The FCC recently asked for input on how to define broadband. Now, industry groups and consumer advocates are weighing in and, not surprisingly, offering differing views on the topic.

Internet Providers Seek Low Broadband Bar

Full article: Reuters
John Poirier
The biggest Internet service providers urged regulators to adopt a conservative definition of "broadband," arguing for minimum speeds that are substantially below those in many other nations. The submissions were filed with the FCC, which had sought comments on how the agency should define broadband.
