Sprint Agrees to Pay Clearwire $1 Billion for Use of Network

Full article: Bloomberg Businessweek
Greg Bensinger and Amy Thomson
Sprint, the third-largest U.S. wireless provider, agreed to pay Clearwire at least $1 billion for the use of its so-called fourth-generation network over the next two years. The deal resolves a disagreement over how much Clearwire could charge Sprint for use of its service, a dispute that emerged after Sprint began selling smartphones for the fourth-generation network in 2010.

Sprint and Clearwire Kiss and Make Up. But Where's WiMAX?

Full article: GigaOM
Ryan Kim
Sprint will pay Clearwire $1 billion over the next two years in a deal that effectively ends the wholesale 4G agreement dispute between the two companies. Clearwire and Sprint make no mention of WiMAX, the 4G technology employed by Clearwire, which leaves open a lot of questions about what 4G technology the two will rely on going forward.

Broadband Stimulus Brings WiMAX to Rural U.S.

Full article: Network World
Brad Reed
Broadband fans living in some rural areas of the country won't have to wait for Clearwire, Verizon or AT&T to deploy 4G services in their areas. That's because the Department of Agriculture has awarded broadband stimulus grants of more than $500 million to 40 companies to deploy WiMAX services in 22 states.

WiMax Is Now Likely to Die

Galen Gruman
If WiMax ever had a shot at relevance, that chance is now gone. Sprint's board members have resigned from Clearwire, a firm owned 54 percent by Sprint that was deploying WiMax wireless broadband technology and dealing the service throughout the United States.

San Francisco's Wait for WiMAX May Soon Be Over

Ryan Kim
Sprint and Clearwire's 4G WiMAX network has rolled out in dozens of cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Seattle and Portland. Now the network is in testing in various neighborhoods in San Francisco and should be up in the coming months, just as Sprint and Clearwire promised.

WiMax Is Dead -- Long Live WiMax?

Full article: BroadbandBreakfast.com
Rahul Gaintonde
WiMax has always been seen as one of the ideal solutions to bring high-speed internet access to rural America, but it has yet to achieve its full potential. With the majority of mobile providers choosing long term evolution, or LTE, as their preferred 4G technology, WiMax seems to have lost its momentum.

Sprint, Clearwire Among Companies Asking for TD-LTE Standard in WiMAX Spectrum

Full article: Engadget
Chris Ziegler
Clearwire has made it crystal clear that it isn't taking a "WiMAX or die" approach to 4G -- and frankly, it couldn't afford to. What's interesting, though, is that the company now appears to be taking a very active role in developing an LTE-based standard that could supplant WiMAX.

Google Could Bid for Indian WiMAX Licenses

Full article: Rethink Wireless
Caroline Gabriel
Google is not looking to become a conventional operator, but takes an interest in spectrum for two reasons -- to pressurize regulators and rival bidders into adopting more open rules, a tactic it used in the US 700MHz auction; and potentially to create a network for service provider partners offering new-style services.

With WiMAX, Walking on the Wireless Side in Baltimore

Peter Wayner
Baltimore is one of the most wired cities in the country. It ascended to the throne after Clearwire introduced WiMAX service last winter, giving the city a preview of what the company is slowly building throughout the country.

WiMAX and Wi-Fi Will Need to Educate to Grab a Piece of the Stimulus Pie

Full article: xchange
For WiMAX and Wi-Fi operators, the broadband stimulus money represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But when they're going up against so many fixed-operator heavy hitters, can they make the case to non-techie types that wireless broadband is a viable option and worthy of government funding?
