An Altered BP Photo Leads the Blogosphere

Full article: Project for Excellence in Journalism
Last week, the two most popular stories among bloggers highlighted the roles of—and differences between—traditional journalism and digital media in a rapidly changing news universe. For the week of July 19-23, 22 percent of the news links on blogs were about a Washington Post report on the photo that made the BP crisis center look busier than it was.

J. David Goodman
As blogs take their place alongside traditional media, their writers must grapple with how to take advantage of moneymaking opportunities, steer clear of federal regulations -- and remain their ornery independent selves.

Full article: Project for Excellence in Journalism
The blogosphere last week once again fixated on one of its most popular topics, global warming. The second-largest subject on the blogs last week was a proposal by a state senator in Utah to cut the 12th grade as a way to save money amidst a budget crisis.

Ad Shift Throws Blogs a Business Lifeline

Full article: New York Times
Claire Cain Miller
Blogs, with their unpredictable and sometimes edgy content, can be frightening to advertisers, but blog networks are less risky. Blog networks also make it easier for advertisers, who do not have time to sift through the millions of blogs on the Web, to reach a big blog audience.

The Myth of the Parasitical Bloggers

Full article: Salon
Glenn Greenwald
One of the favorite accusations of many journalists is that bloggers and other online writers are "parasites" on their work. But traditional media outlets often take stories, ideas and research they find online and pass it off as their own. In other words -- to use their phraseology -- they act parasitically on blogs and bloggers.

Unlike many previous weeks, the two stories generating the most interest in the blogosphere were among those that also received significant attention in the traditional press. Both the pirate hostage saga and the Tea Parties spurred passionate and visceral online commentary.

Researchers Working on Blog Credibility Ranking Systems

Full article: Ars Technica
Jacqui Cheng
Sometimes it's hard to determine if some blogs that are read are full of malarky. Researchers are working on ways to let readers know automatically whether a site is credible or not, but such a system isn't likely to go over well among those who write online.
