RIAA Thinking of Backing Righthaven

Mike Masnick
Every time you think the RIAA can't make things even worse for itself it does. The latest is that it's apparently considering helping Righthaven out.

Nate Anderson
Joel Tenenbaum, the Boston University student whose file-sharing proclivities got him sued by the major music labels, owes them $675,000 -- again.

Former RIAA Lobbyist, Now Judge, Says Lowest Possible Statutory Damages for Single Case of Infringement Is $3,430

Full article: TechDirt
Mike Masnick
Copyright Judge Beryl Howell has apparently decided that the absolute minimum anyone could pay if found in default on a copyright case is not the $200 for innocent infringers, nor the $750 amount that is the official minimum listed in the law but, rather $3,430, which is the $750 amount plus another $2,680 in lawyer's fees.

Media Minutes: August 26, 2011

St. Louis — the largest urban area in Missouri — is getting less news reported by fewer journalists, thanks to covert media consolidation. And the music industry will be shaken by a policy put in place in the 1970’s that could put copyrighted songs back into the hands of the artists who actually created them.

It's Not over Yet, Jammie Thomas: RIAA Appeals Damage Reduction

Full article: Ars Technica
Casey Johnston
The Recording Industry Association of America has appealed a judge's decision to slash the damages award levied against Jammie Thomas-Rasset for copyright infringement from $1.5 million to $54,000 one month ago. The reduction in the amount of the award spurred the RIAA to question whether certain terms in the Copyright Act were misinterpreted and need further examination — specifically, the word "distribution."

Box.net Faces Subpoena over Prerelease Music

Jacqui Cheng
Watch out, Box.net users -- if the RIAA suspects you of mixing in music files with those boring Word and Excel documents that you use for work, you may be in for a legal battle. The RIAA has apparently turned its sights upon the business-oriented file-sharing service after filing a declaration in California federal court.

RIAA-Backed Warrantless Search Bill Advances in California

Jacqui Cheng
If you run a CD or DVD duplication company and you're based in California, you may soon be subject to warrantless searches in order to "fight piracy." California Senate Bill 550 has slowly begun making its way through the state legislature as a way to cut down on counterfeit discs, but critics worry that it may open the door to Fourth Amendment violations.
