Media Is Growing More White -- What's the FCC Doing About It?

Full article: ColorLines
Jason Smith
The increasing lack of racial diversity in the U.S. media landscape is becoming a hot topic and putting pressure on policymakers to pay attention. To effectively instigate and sponsor racial diversity in the media landscape, the FCC in particular will have to think more broadly about media policy entirely.

Third Circuit Decides for People over Corporations in FCC Case

Sue Wilson
The Third Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals handed the public a huge victory and giant corporations a rare loss, in their decision on a case that most of the public knew nothing about, but one which has the potential to benefit real people with better quality news and information for decades to come.

Victory for Media Diversity: Court Strikes Down FCC’s Attempt to Relax Media Ownership Rules

Full article: Democracy Now!
Media consolidation impacts those who are historically disenfranchised in the media system like women, people of color, workers and others who are silenced by non-representation in the media. A court decision to overturn the FCC's rule that made it easier for a single company to own a newspaper and a broadcast outlet in a single market is a huge victory for the millions of Americans that went on record to demand more diverse media.

FAIR vs. PBS, Again

Full article: PBS
Michael Getler
The PBS ombudsman responds to the latest FAIR analysis of PBS news and public affairs programming: PBS can still do better on the diversity front and that everybody will be better off, especially the viewers, if this is done properly. As a viewer, I would not have ranked the race/ethnicity/gender part of that as an obvious problem, but the FAIR analysis is a good reminder and renewable challenge, especially about the need for more public interest guests.

What Everyone Is Missing About NPR's WilliamsGate

Full article: Huffington Post
Farai Chideya
This country needs NPR, now more than ever. But it needs an NPR and media, broadly, that are adventurous rather than expedient when it comes to reporting on a divided America, and cultivating the most diverse staff, and audience. We need a little more light shining on how NPR deals with diversity. NPR's new diversity czar, Keith Woods, should be empowered to look at the issue broadly and respected by management.
