Marguerite Reardon
The end of 2010 is close and it looks like AT&T is beefing up its device portfolio and app offerings for a day when it isn't the only U.S. operator offering the Apple iPhone.

We're Not Ready for the Mobile Revolution

Full article: San Jose Mercury News
Chris O'Brien
The mobile revolution has hit a major roadblock: We are reaching capacity on our wireless networks. This is happening as smartphone innovation has made the U.S. the world's most exciting mobile market after years of lagging. Now innovation could be put on hold while the networks catch up. That's bad for consumers, investors and the economy. Some of the culprits? Lack of competition, lack of investment and exclusive handset deals.

A Brand New Gouge for the Same Crappy Service

Josh Levy
Millions of AT&T customers have been griping about its service. And now, AT&T might start providing additional "incentives" to get customers to stop using so much data -- data that customers are paying for. Here's an idea, AT&T: How about investing in your data network?

A Brand New Gouge for the Same Crappy Service

Seriously, AT&T. This is nuts.

Millions of AT&T customers have been griping about your service from the moment they were forced to join your network to use their iPhones. Complaints run from consistently dropped voice calls to slow and erratic data speeds to a lack of service in huge swaths of the country. Did I mention dropped calls? Can you hear me never?

Cecilia Kang
Hu Meena, CEO of Cellular South, doesn't have a beef with Net Neutrality rules on the plate at the FCC. His real beef is with the assertion by other wireless companies that the mobile market is competitive.

Cecilia Kang
Ruth Milkman, head of the FCC's wireless bureau, talked in a recent interview about the FCC's broad investigation into competition in the wireless industry and practices like exclusive handset deals and roaming deals that hurt consumers and small carriers.

Want That Phone?

Full article: Consumer Reports
Deals between cell-phone makers and wireless carriers shackle almost all of the most popular phones to one carrier. But there are a few encouraging signs for U.S. wireless consumers. Senators from both parties have raised concerns about handset exclusivity with the FCC, which will open a formal proceeding.

AT&T's About-Face

Full article: Free Press
Timothy Karr
AT&T has just done another about-face. Earlier the phone giant said that it "does not manage or approve applications" for the iPhone App Store. But their response to an FCC inquiry indicates otherwise: AT&T acknowledged that it plays a role in authorizing VoIP applications.
