Phillip Dampier
While surface reporting on "white space" broadband and "super Wi-Fi" seem to suggest the United States is on the cusp of opening up much of the UHF television dial to wireless broadband, behind the scenes broadband advocates are fretting about being outmaneuvered by the powerful broadcast lobby

TV Coalition Pitches Own National Broadband Plan

John Eggerton
The Coalition for Free TV and Broadband said that using the one-to-many mobile broadcast delivery, rather than auctioning broadcast spectrum, was the most efficient way to handle wireless broadband spectrum traffic crunches and would also be the most lucrative for the U.S. Treasury.

Juliana Gruenwald
The National Association of Broadcasters appears to be taking the advice of former White House Chief of Staff and now-Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel when he claimed that "you never want a serious crisis to go to waste." NAB spokesman Dennis Wharton and other officials with the group began crowing via Twitter about how broadcasters were on the air providing information about the unusual 5.8 magnitude quake as cellphone networks jammed.

Congress May Fast-Track Spectrum Auctions

Kim McAvoy
Congress may grant the FCC authority to conduct incentive auctions of broadcast TV spectrum sooner than expected -- possibly this summer -- by attaching the authorizing language to the critical debt-ceiling bill that appears headed for passage in the next few weeks.

NAB-Commissioned Study Offers Alternatives for Spectrum Crunch

Full article: Broadcasting & Cable
John Eggerton
The National Association of Broadcasters has filed a study with the FCC concluding that the FCC's National Broadband Plan overstated the pressing need for wireless spectrum relied on faulty info and insufficient analysis to justify a spectrum reclamation push that will "lead to inadequate solutions." But FCC spokesman Rob Kenny reiterated the commission's defense of its approach. "The spectrum crunch is real. If we don't take action soon, it will become a spectrum crisis and ultimately consumers will pay more for less."

NAB, FCC Continue Fight over Spectrum

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
An FCC priority this year will be to find ways to make more efficient use of spectrum in order to bolster wireless broadband. The agency has repeatedly cited broadcasters as the primary culprits when it comes to spectrum inefficiency. None of this has pleased broadcasters or their chief policy group NAB, who last January claimed the FCC was ignoring spectrum squatters. So far government efforts to improve next-generation wireless aren't really accomplishing anything the industry wasn't intent on accomplishing in their own due time.

FCC Chairman Holds Private Meeting with State Broadcasters

John Eggerton
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski met with most of a hundred state broadcasters in Las Vegas this week to talk about the FCC's spectrum auction plan, according to an FCC official familiar with the meeting. The chairman was there to address the National Association of Broadcasters convention on that very topic.

NAB to Genachowski: Prove That Cablecos Aren't Hoarding Spectrum

Jim Barthold
The FCC should conduct an "independent study to confirm Chairman Julius Genachowski's assurances that spectrum suitable for wireless broadband is not lying fallow," according to National Association of Broadcasters President-CEO Gordon Smith. Broadcasters believe the FCC is covetous of spectrum they hold -- and have held -- for a wireless-centric national broadband network.

Sara Jerome
Increasingly a target this year as the administration looks to repurpose TV airwaves, the National Association of Broadcasters is making a heightened push to register its spectrum arguments as critical to the FCC's lagging media agenda.
