Political wrangling is holding Super Wi-Fi spectrum hostage. The House has tacked on amendments to its payroll tax bill that spell big trouble for the FCC and spectrum use. And a new bill in the Illinois legislature would allow people to record on-duty police in public without permission.

Phillip Dampier
While surface reporting on "white space" broadband and "super Wi-Fi" seem to suggest the United States is on the cusp of opening up much of the UHF television dial to wireless broadband, behind the scenes broadband advocates are fretting about being outmaneuvered by the powerful broadcast lobby

FCC Approves First Device to Run in White Spaces

Full article: All Things Digital
Ina Fried
The FCC approved the first device to run in the so-called "white spaces" between TV channels. The product getting the okay is designed to offer broadband service and the manufacturer has been among the companies heavily involved in working with the FCC to test white-spaces devices.

Congress, Please Don't Kill White Spaces

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
The spectrum bill that recently passed the House will make any technologist weep. I know the tech community is upset over the Stop Online Piracy Act, but this bill represents a somewhat geekier threat -- killing more unlicensed spectrum. So Silicon Valley may want to get active over this one too. The House version of the bill will ensure that none of the airwaves auctioned off from the digital TV band will be used for unlicensed wireless.

Will Super Wi-Fi Live Up to Its Name?

Full article: Technology Review
Scott Woolley
It's likely that a few years from now, Americans will be able to use their laptops, smartphones and other wireless devices to get online using "Super Wi-Fi," a new standard that will increase capacity in places where regular Wi-Fi networks have become overcrowded. The bad news: Most people won't be able to use those airwaves to make long-range connections, which was supposed to be the major technological advance that would put the "super" in Super Wi-Fi.

The FCC Is Testing the Ultra-Mega-Turbo-High-Speed Internet

John Moe
The area between broadcast TV channels on the spectrum is referred to as white space. A new FCC test begins Sept. 19 to convert it to a much stronger Internet-access pipeline.

A Database to Help the Military Share Its Airwaves

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
The spectrum shortage is big news. Backed by scary charts and stats from Cisco, and the rationale for a $39-billion merger of AT&T and T-Mobile that the Justice Department is currently fighting, the running narrative is that we want to use a ton of data on our mobile devices and our airwaves aren't going to support it anymore. So we need more spectrum, and we need it now. But what if the solution isn't more spectrum, but rather learning how to share?

Stacey Higginbotham
Call it what you want, but Super Wi-Fi, or white spaces broadband, just got a big win today when the FCC approved the first trial using the radio and database needed to deliver white spaces broadband.
