Erika Engle
Previously useless satellite radios in thousands of Hawaii passenger vehicles could soon receive more than 130 channels of music, news/talk, sports and other entertainment programming. New York-based Sirius XM Radio has received temporary authority from the FCC to deliver its satellite radio service to Honolulu and parts of Alaska via ground-based repeaters, which broadcast a signal from a radio tower.

Saeed Shabazz
Advances in technology and an old school sense of mission are driving Black media makers to find new ways to communicate, organize and advocate. They say the future is in low power stations with limited broadcast areas, Internet radio which allows for unfiltered messages and satellite radio stations.

David Oxenford
The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee approved a bill that would impose, for the first time, a royalty on radio broadcasters for the public performance of sound recordings in their over-the-air broadcasts.

Sirius XM Sticks It to Subscribers

Full article: CNet
Steve Guttenberg
How's the Sirius XM satellite radio monopoly working out for subscribers? Not so well. Now that Sirius XM is the only game in town, it's nudging up fees for subscribers. Can subscriber losses -- now estimated at 400,000 -- be attributed to the recent price hikes?

Sirius-XM Merger Still Faces Loose Ends at FCC

Matthew Lasar
The Sirius XM merger is a done deal, but some issues around those 'voluntary commitments' still need to be resolved. And, judging by comments to the FCC, the commitments are still controversial.

Serious Threats to Sirius Radio

Olga Kharif
Since its inception, satellite radio bragged that unique content represented a key competitive weapon in the crowded digital media market. But as Web radio and mobile radio applications flourish, they are beginning to erode the value of Sirius's pricey content deals.

Two Court of Appeals Arguments on Sound Recording Music Royalty Rates

Full article: Broadcast Law Blog
David Oxenford
The overriding question for the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., in two royalty cases doesn't concern Internet radio or satellite radio royalty rates. The question is whether the judges on the CRB were constitutionally appointed and whether any decisions of the Board had any validity.

Jerry Del Colliano
Sirius XM is going first because their huge debt comes due first. Terrestrial radio will follow. Plainly put, there's no money left in the consolidated radio till. The radio business won't be down 4 percent or even 10 percent this year. It is heading for 25 or 30 percent or worse.

Sirius-XM Jacks Up Rates, Charges for Music Site

Erik Sass
Sirius-XM Radio is raising rates on certain customers -- namely, subscribers who want to open multiple accounts. The satellite radio broadcaster is also ending its free Web-based music service. Neither measure affects the a la carte pricing structure for subscriptions adopted by the newly merged company last year.
