The American Civil Liberties Union and its Tennessee branch sued two Tennessee school districts in federal court, claiming that the districts are unconstitutionally blocking students from accessing online information about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender issues.

Half of Tennessee on Wrong Side of Digital Divide

Full article: Speed Matters
The lack of broadband access and adoption in Tennessee -- as elsewhere -- creates a significant disadvantage for state residents and businesses. About half of Tennessee's adult population does not have high-speed Internet service. Some of those people don't have it for financial or other reasons. Ten percent of the state doesn't have any access at all.

Stimulus Funds Could Connect More Rural Areas to Broadband

Full article: Tennessean
Jennifer Brooks
The high-speed broadband connections most urban residents and businesses take for granted are nowhere to be found in many rural, and not-so-rural, areas in Middle Tennessee. But for many residents, the cost of broadband is just as much a barrier to access as the physical lack of a high-speed line.

Andy Sher
As AT&T continues its thus-far-successful legislative drive to deregulate its basic telephone service, the telecom giant's efforts are being aided by a small army of 20 lobbyists. And lawmakers are awash in AT&T PAC money.

The Chattanooga Electric Power Board is installing fiber-optic lines to create a smart grid that also offers residential high-speed Internet, cable and telephone service.
