Getting What You Pay for on the Mobile Internet

Full article: New York Times
Kevin J. O'Brien
All-you-can-eat plans were introduced when the mobile Web was in its infancy, and demand was profitable and manageable. But with traffic booming, reflecting the growing popularity of smart phones, social networking and downloading music and video, network operators fear that flat-rate plans will eat into profits or even fail to cover costs. The result is likely to be higher prices for consumers.

Charter Eyeing 'Consumption Based Billing'

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
After Charter won approval of its bankruptcy plan, the company said it will raise prices and consider consumption-based billing. Charter hasn't been profitable since the company went public in 1999 and constantly ranks at the bottom of most customer satisfaction surveys.

Is Consumption-Based Billing Really Inevitable?

Full article: Broadband Reports
Karl Bode
There's no real debate that metered billing would be great for carriers, but the fact remains these new pricing models may not be good for consumers -- which ISPs couldn't care less about. What companies like Time Warner Cable are proposing, is a system that takes aim at ordinary families, putting them on new pricing models where bandwidth is rationed.

DPI: It's Going to Be About More Than Ads

Full article: GigaOM
Stacey Higginbotham
It's likely most carriers will use deep packet inspection, which can determine the details of packets traveling over the Web, to boost sales in far more subtle ways than behavioral advertising: Consumption-based broadband is one scheme that Internet Service Providers will try to push onto customers.
