Curtis Cartier
A U.S. District Court judge in Portland has drawn a line in the sand between "journalist" and "blogger." And for Crystal Cox, a woman on the latter end of that comparison, the distinction has cost her $2.5 million.

New York Shield Law Protects Media in MLB Suit

Full article: Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press
Major League Baseball filed a complaint against an insurance company to find out who leaked confidential financial information to the Associated Press and Deadspin.com, but did not include the news organizations in the filing. New York's shield law includes absolute protection for journalists' confidential sources, leaving the league without an option to pursue the two organizations that published the financial records of six baseball franchises in August of last year.

Lawmakers in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua approved a bill allowing reporters to withhold the names of sources. The measure aims both to protect sources and to give journalists a right to confidentiality regarding the information they have and how they obtain it.

Jonathan Peters
If you're a self-described journalist who posts on Internet message boards, then you're not protected by the reporter's shield law. So says, at least, the Supreme Court of New Jersey.

Legislators Consider Virginia Journalist Shield Law

Full article: Capital News Service
Jeannette Porter
While Virginia seemingly venerates all things Jeffersonian, the commonwealth has not yet enshrined in law one of Thomas Jefferson's most ardently held principles: the protected role of a free press in a democracy. Delegate Barbara Comstock would like to change that. She introduced House Bill 2199, which would grant journalists limited protection from being compelled to disclose confidential sources.
