AT&T promises to create 100,000 new jobs with its proposed takeover of T-Mobile. But company documents reveal it’s more likely that 20,000 jobs will be lost. So why are some elected officials still supporting the merger? And a new native-owned radio station is broadcasting throughout the White Earth Nation in Minnesota.

The FCC awarded hundreds of construction permits to nonprofit groups for full-power radio stations across the country. While some of those groups are now on the air, others are struggling to get up and running in the face of looming deadlines.

Rural Texas Station Critical Resource During Recent Wildfire

Emily Hellewell
As a brush fire quickly spread across ranch lands in far west Texas, tiny public radio station, KRTS, was the only local broadcaster in the listening area. With lives at stake, the small crew went to work broadcasting critical emergency alerts and information to their community.

Saving Rural Stations

Full article: SavetheNews.org
Josh Stearns
The vast majority of federal funding provided to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is distributed out to local stations like WMMT that collectively reach roughly 98 percent of the United States. And like WMMT, these stations don't just broadcast national news and Car Talk. At a time when newspapers are cutting back and struggling to stay afloat, and when the 6 o'clock news is filled with more weather reports and commercials than news, public broadcasters are actually investing more in local reporting.

Gavin Dahl
We need a more robust, more diverse NPR. Bringing together all our public interest journalism resources -- including community radio and NPR, cable access and PBS, nonprofit startups and independent bloggers -- means thinking critically about the "premier broadcast news organization" in America and how we can create a new foundation for American journalism.

Radio's Fall -- Part One: No Money, Mo' Problems

Radio is still the best communications technology for reaching the American people. It is free to listen, of course, and community radio provides citizens with access to the public airwaves, and opportunities to amplify voices underserved by NPR and Clear Channel. So why doesn't the social justice community at large get behind the buildout of community radio?

Gordon Smith Under Fire from Community Radio Activists

Full article: Oregonian
Jeff Mapes
Gordon Smith is no longer one of Oregon's U.S. senators, but community radio activists are trying to paint him as still pulling secretive strings in Congress. Smith is now president of the National Association Broadcasters, which is fighting legislation that would allow the creation of hundreds of low-power, non-commercial radio stations around the country.
