Ben Dimiero
Controversial legislation that the co-founder of Google has warned "would put us on a par with the most oppressive nations in the world" has received virtually no coverage from major American television news outlets during their evening newscasts and opinion programming.

Protest Puts Coverage in Spotlight

Full article: New York Times
Brian Stelter
As police officers cleared protesters last week from Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan, the birthplace of Occupy Wall Street, they made sure most reporters were kept blocks away, supposedly for their own protection. But in almost every other respect, mainstream news media outlets have been put right in the middle by the movement.

Full article: CNet
Steven Musil
Anonymous plans to take down the Fox News website on Nov. 5, according to a new video apparently released by the hacker group. The group said it is targeting the network for what it called biased news coverage of the Occupy Wall Street protests occurring in cities across the country.

After three weeks of the Occupy Wall Street protests, the establishment media are beginning to pick up the story. But increased airtime doesn’t necessarily equal quality reporting. And a new paper says that Net Neutrality generates economic benefits for consumers — as much as $5,600 per user, per year.

Starving for Coverage

James Fahn
What a difference a generation makes. Back in 1984-85, groundbreaking media coverage of the terrible drought and famine that affected around eight million people in Ethiopia spurred an outpouring of Western relief efforts. Contrast that to the media and cultural response to the current famine in Somalia and surrounding countries. “In July and August the food crisis has accounted for just 0.7 percent of the newshole,” notes a recent report. “Year-to-date the crisis registers at just 0.2 percent.”

Media Minutes: July 1, 2011

What do you do if you live in one of the almost 80 communities across the country where media companies are quietly merging their TV newsrooms, cutting staff and sharing news content? ChangetheChannels.org is calling attention to this growing problem. And an interesting case that could affect the future of documentary filmmaking is unfolding in an unlikely place: tax court.

Osama bin Laden's Death Dominates the News

Full article: Project for Excellence in Journalism
Jesse Holcomb
The death of Osama bin Laden drove unprecedented amounts of coverage last week, making it the biggest story in a single week since the Pew Research Center's Project for Excellence in Journalism began tracking mainstream media coverage in January 2007.

How the Media Have Covered bin Laden's Death

Full article: Project for Excellence in Journalism
Mark Jurkowitz
In the first three days since the death of Osama bin Laden, the attention given to the event in both traditional and new media has been only nominally focused on the political ramifications of the terrorist's death. Instead, the discussion across a broad range of mainstream media, on Facebook, Twitter and in the blogosphere, has centered on trying to sort out what happened and on people's feelings about it. But so far the coverage has defied the tendency seen in many major national news events to turn quickly partisan.
