Free Press: Verizon May Have Violated Spectrum Rules in Google Negotiation

Full article: National Journal
Sara Jerome
Free Press charged that Verizon may have violated federal rules for openness by wrangling with Google over a mobile payment app. Google says that Verizon asked it not to include the program Google Wallet on the Galaxy Nexus phone, which runs Google's Android operating system. That raised eyebrows because Google Wallet competes with a payment system from Verizon and AT&T.

Verizon's App-Blocking Action

Full article: SavetheInternet.com
Josh Levy
Verizon Wireless is at it again. Just months after it got busted blocking applications in the Android Market, the carrier confirmed it is restricting consumers' ability to download and use Google Wallet -- the search giant's new mobile payment app -- on the new flagship Galaxy Nexus phone.

Net Neutrality: What's Mobile Got to Do with It?

Full article: SavetheInternet.com
Josh Levy
Unlike corporations like Verizon — which re-filed its own lawsuit arguing that the FCC doesn't have the authority to enforce Net Neutrality — we sued because we think the FCC's rules need to be stronger. Particularly, they need to protect users of the mobile Internet. Right now, they don't do that at all — meaning that companies currently have the right to block your ability to access almost any site when you go online using your smartphone or wireless tablet.

With AT&T-T-Mobile, Wireless Net Neutrality Should Be Back on the Table

Full article: Ars Technica
Matthew Lasar
The government's decision to waive unfair discrimination provisions against wireless broadband was based on a widely vetted evaluation of the competitive nature of that market. Surely, a proposal that would result in one carrier controlling almost 42 percent of wireless subscriber share changes that assessment. The FCC, FTC, Department of Justice, and Congress must now decide how much.

Free Press Urges FCC to Investigate MetroPCS 4G Service Plans

Full article: Free Press
MetroPCS has announced changes to its 4G service plans that offer a glimpse of the future of the mobile Internet, as blessed by the FCC, where carriers, not users, decide what content is important. The FCC must not stand idly by while carriers are engaging in anti-consumer and anti-competitive behavior. The agency should investigate.

A Scary Picture for the Future of the Wireless Web

Craig Aaron
As the FCC weighs new Net Neutrality rules, the dominant phone companies and their vendors are plotting a dystopian future for consumers that you won't see in their soft-focus ads. But you will see it soon enough.

The Wireless Industry: We're Different! (When It Suits Us)

Adam Lynn
The efforts by the wireless industry to carve out exceptions and exemptions for wireless providers when it comes to Network Neutrality is blatant hypocrisy. The FCC should see through these transparent attempts to skew the competitive landscape and apply the same rules to all companies that offer access to the Internet whether through a wireless or wireline connection.

John Eggerton
CTIA: The Wireless Association says it reluctantly agreed to an FCC Network Neutrality proposal currently teed up for a Dec. 21 vote, and still does. But CTIA President Steve Largent also said that if the FCC tried to impose more than the transparency and non-blocking items now applied in the draft order, his association would oppose it and would not rule out taking it to court.

David Hatch
During a recent speech, FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn -- whose "yes" vote is essential for passage of new agency rules designed to preserve the Internet's openness -- said she's concerned that Chairman Julius Genachowski's proposal doesn't apply stringently enough to wireless service.
