Don't Mess with Grandma

Full article: SavetheInternet.com
Philip Dampier
AT&T's pushback on Rep. Eric Massa's (D-N.Y.) consumer protection legislation brought quite a reaction when the phone giant invoked a vision of grandma being forced to overpay for her broadband account. Upset grandmothers attacked AT&T for presuming they can't spot a raw deal when they see one.

Lawmaker Taking on ISPs' Metered Usage Plans

Full article: InternetNews.com
Kenneth Corbin
Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.), announced plans to introduce a bill that would require ISPs to secure regulatory approval before rolling out a pricing model that would charge consumers based on how much they use their Internet connection. Massa's bill stems from a dispute over Time Warner Cable's plans to expand trials of a usage-based pricing model to new markets.

Wendy Davis
The Broadband Internet Fairness Act, unveiled by Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.), would require ISPs with more than 2 million customers to seek Federal Trade Commission approval before shifting to usage-based pricing. The act also would require the FTC to nix the new pricing if it determines that the rates and terms are unreasonable or discriminatory.

Karl Bode
Prompted by Time Warner Cable's botched attempt to force low caps and metered billing on its customers, Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) unveiled the Broadband Internet Fairness Act, legislation aimed at protecting consumers from unreasonable broadband overage charges.

Eric Massa (D-N.Y.), responding to his district's outrage at Time Warner Cable's earlier test of usage caps, is now lining up sponsors for his Broadband Internet Fairness Act, which would give the Federal Trade Commission veto power over usage-based pricing plans.

Time Warner Cable Caps Prompt Fairness Bill

Full article: PC Magazine
Chloe Albanesius
Time Warner Cable has temporarily shelved plans for usage-based caps, but Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) is still concerned. Massa introduced a bill that would require ISPs that plan to introduce usage-based caps to submit their plans to the Federal Trade Commission prior to implementation. If the agency were to find these plans unreasonable then, they would be banned.

Grant Gross
A new bill introduced by Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) would require large broadband providers to get permission from the Federal Trade Commission before rolling out broadband subscription fees based on bandwidth use.
