Hollywood Reporter to Become a Weekly Magazine

Full article: New York Times
Brooks Barnes and Jeremy W. Peters
The Hollywood Reporter has been dying a slow death for a decade, bleeding from layoffs, vanishing advertisers and diminished relevance in a news cycle now dominated by cutthroat entertainment blogs. Its top editors and executives all agreed: to save the Reporter, a mere refocusing of the business model would not do; they needed to eviscerate it.

Zeke Turner
USA Today publisher Dave Hunke is cutting 9 percent of his staff and shuffling the executive deck at the paper. "This gets us ready for our next quarter century," Hunke said. It's still unclear which sections of the operation will be hardest hit, although it looks like 130 people will be out of a job.

Kelly Truong
Approximately 600 student newspapers use College Publisher, a content-management system owned by College Media Network. The service offers Web-page templates and around-the-clock technical support, a draw for student journalists with limited resources. However, the uniformity of the templates limits what journalists can do on the Web.

Martin Peers
The cable-TV industry likes to talk about growth in terms of households connecting and disconnecting to their services. But the biggest disconnect of all may be in the industry's thinking.

Mathew Ingram
Can building a network of local bloggers help turn online journalism into a money-making proposition? Two new media ventures are hoping that it can, and have partnered with a startup called GrowthSpur to try and make that hope become a reality.

Are Newspapers Sticking to a Premium Strategy Amid Digital Disruption?

Rick Edmonds
Six months into 2010, this is shaping up to be a better year for newspapers. One might be cheered simply by the pace and scope of experimentation in 2010. But is the industry is readers and advertisers a clear signal of what newspapers are changing into?

Should the Government Bail Out Journalism?

Full article: The Atlantic
Derek Thompson
Newspapers might not be essential for democracy, but some form of journalism certainly is. And journalism, as you might have heard, is struggling. Local and loyal newspaper readers have scattered across the Internet. Their attention spans have scattered, too, and ad revenue has dwindled. Is it time for another bailout?

Citizen Journalism Not Making Up for Loss of Local Newspapers

Full article: Ars Technica
John Timmer
Traditional newspapers have undergone a period of contraction, with many papers shutting down entirely. At the same time, the growth of the Internet and increasing availability of tools for content production has fueled hopes that citizen journalism might pick up some of the slack. But a new survey of citizen journalism sites suggests that we're a long way from replacing what has been lost.
