Cablevision Posts Profit, Revenue Up 5 Percent

Full article: Huffington Post
Deborah Yao
Cablevision, the nation's fifth-largest cable TV operator, posted a profit for the fourth quarter as more customers signed up for digital cable TV, phone and Internet services. The only money-losing division was its Newsday newspaper.

After Three Months, Only 35 Paying Customers for Newday's Web Site

Full article: New York Observer
John Koblin
In late October, Newsday, the Long Island daily, put its Web site, newsday.com, behind a pay wall. So, three months later, how many people have signed up to pay $5 a week, or $260 a year, to get unfettered access to newsday.com? The answer: 35 people. As in fewer than three dozen. As in a decent-sized elementary-school class.

David Goetzl
Newsday.com saw another major drop in both unique visitors and page views in December as the site continued to charge people for unlimited access to content. In December, unique visitors declined 47 percent, while page views fell 32 percent -- both compared to December 2008.

Columnist Quits After Newsday Starts Charging for Its Web Site

Full article: New York Times
Richard Perez-Pena
With news organizations struggling and newsroom jobs disappearing, each week brings new calls from writers and editors who believe their flagging employers should save themselves by charging for Internet access. So count Saul Friedman a contrarian twice over. Friedman, who had written a column for Newsday since 1996, quit over the paper's decision to require readers to pay for access to its Web site.

Newsday Pay Wall Debuts --- With Most Stories Behind It

Full article: Editor & Publisher
Joe Strupp
As promised, Newsday has launched its new pay wall site, which only allows full access for print subscribers of the newspaper and customers of its Cablevision sibling, Optimum Online. The site is clearly doing its best to make sure online readers know what they are missing.

Richard Perez-Pena
Newsday will become one of a handful of American newspapers to charge readers for access online, starting later this month, the newspaper announced, in what may be a sign of things to come for a troubled industry.

Newsday Rejects Ads by Verizon, Now a Rival

Full article: New York Times
Richard Perez-Pena
Newsday has turned away a steady, lucrative customer that is also a direct competitor of the paper's parent company, Cablevision. Verizon bought full-page ads in Newsday several times a month for its FiOS Internet and television service until a few months ago, when the paper said it would no longer take them, according to a Verizon executive and ad buyers who work with the company.

Robert E. Kessler
A federal judge said he will hold a hearing to determine whether to bar Newsday from continuing to publish, and News12-TV from broadcasting pictures of Nassau legislator Roger Corbin in handcuffs. An attorney for the news companies said, "Courts do not get [into] telling the media what to publish."

Newsday to Begin Charging for Online News

Full article: CNet
Steven Musil
New York newspaper Newsday plans to begin charging online readers for access to its content, rejecting a trend toward free online newspaper content. The move was announced as the newspaper industry is mired in financial turmoil and Newsday itself faces a writedown in value.

Richard Perez-Pena
The top editors at Newsday reported for work on Jan. 20, ending a period of several days in which even their own staff did not know whether they had been ousted by the paper's new owner, Cablevision Systems, in a dispute over news coverage.
