News Corp. honcho Rupert Murdoch threw his weight behind Congress' attempt to restrict the Internet, personally lobbying leaders on Capitol Hill for two measures that purport to combat piracy. Murdoch's media empire is among some 350 large corporations that have come out in favor of the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House, as well as the Protect IP Act in the Senate.

"I think we’ve had enough questions," Rupert Murdoch told News Corp. shareholders, less than an hour and a half into the company's annual shareholder meeting at Fox Studios in Los Angeles. "I declare the meeting finished." The meeting wasn’t actually finished -- shareholders had yet to vote on whether Murdoch, the company's CEO, should continue as chairman. But Murdoch was at least able to bring an abrupt halt to a meeting that had gotten embarrassing.

News Corp. said all 15 directors were elected at the meeting in Los Angeles, while a proposal to split Murdoch's role as chairman and chief executive officer was rejected. The company failed to provide vote totals as it has in the past. Complete results will be filed with regulators early this week, according to a statement.

The News Corp. annual shareholders meeting was a closely controlled affair, held on a Fox studio lot behind tight security. Shareholders and media could only be bused in by News Corp. to evade the 200 or so protesters outside, no recording devices were permitted at the event and the Fox lot's normal Wi-Fi access was cut off.
